A'IBOM PARLIAMENT CALLS FOR REGULATION OF TRADITIONAL BIRTH ATTENDANTS
By Julius Nsikak
During Wednesday's legislative session, the Akwa Ibom State Parliament on resumption of its second legislative year, has urged the regulation of traditional birth attendants in the state.
This follows a motion sponsored by member representing Eket State Constituency, Hon. Nsidibe Akata.
The Eket legislator, expressed concern about the proliferation of traditional birth homes managed by non professional attendants, which according to him has increased maternal and child mortality in the state.
While stating UNICEF statistics, he maintained that Nigeria records the second-highest number of infant deaths during delivery globally.
Hon. Akata disclosed the challenges faced by traditional birth homes, including inadequate prenatal and post-natal care, unverified concoctions, lack of supervisory oversight, and absence of emergency medical equipment.
He emphasised that most maternal and child mortalities occur due to complications at the hands of untrained traditional birth attendants.
The House resolved to direct the Ministry of Health to register traditional birth attendants, regulate and monitor their practices, and initiate quality training programmes to improve and advance maternal health.
Presiding over the legislative session, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. (Elder) Udeme Otong, directed the House Committee on Health, spearheaded by Ibiono Ibom lawmaker, Hon. (Comrd) Moses Essien to collaborate with the Ministry of Health, relevant MDAs and other sister health actors to implement the resolutions and report back within one month.
Meanwhile, the House received a motion calling for a clampdown on illegal nursery and primary schools in the state.
