Akwa Ibom State Parliament recently passed the Local Government (Administration) Amendment Bill into law during its legislative session.

The bill, titled "A Bill For A Law To Amend The Local Government (Administration) Law, Cap 90, Laws Of Akwa Ibom State 2022 (As Amended) And For Other Matters Connected Therewith," was sponsored by Rt. Hon. (Elder) Mfon Idung, member representing Etim Ekpo/Ika State Constituency.

To facilitate the bill's second reading, a motion was moved by Deputy Majority Leader, Rt. Hon. Otobong Bob (Nsit Ubium) and seconded by Chief Whip, Rt. Hon. Effiong Johnson (Mbo).

The Chairman, House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Elder Idung, explained that the amendment aims to foster political harmony and inclusivity.

The amendment will create rooms for supervisors and special advisors, ensuring each ward has a say in council operations, following the creation of extra wards by the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC).

The bill seeks to involve all 31 local government councils and ensure proper delegation, allowing for supervisors and special advisors' appointments.

Members representing Mkpat Enin State Constituency, Hon. Uwem Peter, and Mbo State Constituency, Rt. Hon. Effiong Johnson, supported the amendment.

They noted it would provide representation at the grassroots and ensure fairness.

After deliberations, Deputy Majority Leader moved a motion for the House to dissolve into the Committee of the Whole, seconded by Rt. Hon. Asuquo Nana (Ikono).

Under the speaker's chairmanship, the Committee of the Whole adopted some sections (49 and 52).

A motion to reconstitute the House was then moved by Rt. Hon. Otobong Bob and seconded by Hon. Bassey Bassey (Okobo).

Upon resumption, Majority Leader Hon. Sunday Johnny (Onna) moved a motion to adopt the Committee of the Whole's report, seconded by Hon. Lawrence Udoide (Ini).

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. (Elder) Udeme Otong announced the bill's passage into law, stating, "This is the law of the land."

He directed Clerk of the House, Mrs. Nsikak-Abasi Orok to communicate the resolution to State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno for assent.
