The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly (AKHA) has taken a significant step towards addressing the deplorable state of the Government Primary School, Midim Waterside, in Abak Local Government Area.
A Motion sponsored by the Member representing Etim Ekpo/Ika State Constituency, Rt. Hon. Mfon Idung, highlighted the alarming condition of the school's infrastructure, including leaking roofs, cracked walls, broken windows, and dilapidated furniture.
Rt. Hon. Idung emphasised that these conditions not only hinder the pupils' ability to focus on their studies but also pose a serious safety risk to both pupils and staff.
The Motion received support from Hon. Selinah Ukpatu (Ikot Abasi/Eastern Obolo), Hon. Moses Essien (Ibiono Ibom), Hon. Udobia Friday (Esit Eket/Ibeno), and Rt. Hon. Otobong Bob (Nsit Ubium), among other Members of the House.
In response, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. (Elder) Udeme Otong, expressed optimism that the school would be prioritised in the state government's ongoing efforts to transform education in the state.
He directed the Clerk of the Assembly, Mrs. Nsikak-Abasi Orok, to write to Governor Umo Eno, requesting immediate renovation of the primary school.
