The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, has commenced its 2024 Press Week with a thought-provoking theme: "Artificial Intelligence: The Future of Media Ethics and Content Modulation."
The event, which began on Monday, December 2, 2024, at the NUJ Press Centre in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, brought together esteemed speakers, journalists, and participants from various walks of life.
Declaring the event open, Honourable Martin Esin, a federal lawmaker representing Oron federal constituency, expressed his delight and privilege to attend. He commended the NUJ Akwa Ibom State Council Chairman, Comrade Amos Etuk, for promoting and sustaining the course of journalism in the state.
Esin stressed the importance of the topic, describing it as a pressing issue affecting individuals, journalists, organizations, and society at large. He noted that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is shaping and redirecting the journalism sector in hard news gathering and consumption.
Comrade Ini Ememobong, the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Information, discussed the central topic, emphasising the need to understand the dynamics of AI and its impact on media ethics and content modulation. He advised participants to evolve with the technology, rather than fearing it.
Other notable speakers included Mr. Hanson Johnson, an ICT expert, who highlighted the importance of AI in creating and managing content on platforms.
Dr. Abasifreke Idiong, a seasoned lecturer at the University of Uyo, who reassured journalists that AI would not replace them, but rather enhance their job effectiveness; and Honourable Uduak Ekpo Ufot, a member of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, who cautioned that AI could be used to create fake news.
Comrade Amos Etuk, Chairman of the NUJ Akwa Ibom State Council, in his welcome address, appreciated the guests for attending the event. He stressed that the topic has raised threats and challenges bordering on authenticity and credibility of media content.
The event was attended by dignitaries, including former commissioners, managing editors, and deans of faculties. The occasion was also spiced up with cultural performances by the Abasiakara cultural troupe and modern theatre group.
As the media landscape continues to evolve, the integration of AI is becoming increasingly important. While some may view AI as a threat, others see it as an opportunity to enhance job effectiveness and create new possibilities.
As Honourable Martin Esin noted, "Artificial Intelligence is shaping and redirecting the journalism sector in hard news gathering and consumption.
