AKWA IBOM POLICE COMMAND TO ENFORCE THIRD-PARTY VEHICLE INSURANCE

The Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, has held a crucial meeting with key stakeholders to ensure a faultless implementation of third-party vehicle insurance in Akwa Ibom State. 

The meeting took place recently at the Police Command Headquarters, Ikot Akpan Abia in Uyo, and had representions from the Federal Road Safety Corps, (FRSC), National Union of Road Transport Workers, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), amongst others. 

CP Azare stressed the importance of adhering to instructions from the  Inspector General of Police, IGP,  Kayode Egbetokun PhD, NPM, regarding the enforcement of third-party vehicle insurance in Akwa Ibom State. 

He emphasised that all vehicle owners must possess valid third party insurance as required by section 68 of the Insurance Act and section 312 of the 1945 Motor Vehicle (Third Party Insurance) Act.

He warned that vehicles without valid insurance would be impounded and only released upon presentation of genuine documents, putting it clear that the command will not tolerate any fake insurance document.

"However, anyone in possession of a fake insurance document would be required to identify the issuing source.'

The police commissioner, advised the public to patronise authentic insurance providers, restated that compliance would prevent embarrassments and foster road safety. 

The Sector Commander of the FRSC, called on road users to update their insurance and other vehicle particulars, describing them as key documents to avoid inconvenience during enforcement. 

The Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Internal Revenue Service, Mr. Okon Okon,   commended the Police Command for its proactive leadership, stating that third-party insurance is a basic requirement for all vehicles.

The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Akwa Ibom State Council, Comrade Amos Etuk, applauded CP Azare for his visionary and proactive approach, pledging the support of journalists in creating awareness to ensure the success of the initiative. 

The Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Elder Sunny James, also commended the police for calling the strategic meeting, appealing to members of the public to renew their vehicle particulars before the expiration of the grace period given. 

The enforcement exercise is expected to commence across the 31 Local Government Areas of the state on February 1, 2025.
