GOV. ENO INTERVENES IN EASTERN OBOLO-SPFL CRISIS, PROMISES FAIR RESOLUTION, SUSTAINABLE INDUSTRIALISATION

By Julius Nsikak, Uyo

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Bassey Eno, has stepped in to resolve the escalating conflict between the people of Eastern Obolo Local Government Area and Sterling Petrochemical and Fertilizer Limited (SPFL).

After a thorough tour of SPFL's facility, the Governor announced the formation of a high-powered committee to address the host communities' grievances and ensure a fair and lasting resolution.

The committee will comprise representatives from the state government, Eastern Obolo, SPFL, and security agencies, and will focus on environmental concerns, relocation of affected communities, land usage, and other critical issues threatening peace in the area.

The Governor's intervention comes after tensions in Eastern Obolo reached a boiling point, with the Paramount Ruler, HRM Uboon Harry J. Etetor IX, issuing a 14-day ultimatum to SPFL to address the community's grievances.

The Obolo people had allegedly accused SPFL of forcefully closing federal navigation waterways, displacing communities, and causing flooding, pollution, and deaths. The community also said that SPFL had violated Nigeria's expatriate quota policy by employing over 1,000 undocumented foreign workers, and that local content laws were being ignored.

Governor Eno stressed the importance of peaceful coexistence and assured the people that Akwa Ibom's industrialization efforts would not come at the cost of human suffering.

He appealed to the host communities to remain calm as the government works to reconcile all parties involved.

The Chairman of Eastern Obolo LGA, Mr. Samuel Nteogwuijah, thanked the Governor for his swift action, while Selina Ukpatu, member representing Ikot Abasi/Eastern Obolo state constituency, expressed confidence in the Governor's leadership and optimism that the intervention would lead to lasting peace.

SPFL's Managing Director, Mr. Mohit Barot, pledged commitment to abide by government directives and improve community relations.
