The Akwa Ibom State Legislature has recently passed a law providing for the establishment of the Akwa Ibom State University of Education, Afaha Nsit, and making provisions for its administration and other connected purposes.
This legislation follows a report presented by the Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly Committee on Education, Hon. (Mrs.) Kenim Onofiok, also a member representing Oron/Odung Uko State Constituency.
Mrs. Onofiok explained that the bill will provide advanced teacher education programmes and opportunities for children in the state and beyond seeking admission into degree-awarding institutions. She noted that students have lost interest in the three-year National Certificate for Education (NCE) programmes, preferring the four-year degree programme, resulting in declining admissions into NCE programmes at the college.
After the education committee chairman's report, the House dissolved into a Committee of the Whole, considered 33 clauses and adopted the committee's recommendations.
The Majority Leader, Hon. Sunday Johnny, moved the motion for the bill's third reading and passage, seconded by the Deputy Chief Whip, Hon. Sampson Idiong.
Subsequently, the bill was passed at the legislative session presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. (Elder) Udeme Otong, effective March 13, 2025.
Elder Otong directed the Clerk of the House, Mrs. Nsikak - Abasi Orok to communicate the development to the governor for assent.
