IKONO CHAIRMAN FLAGS OFF 5-DAY ENTREPRENEURIAL TRAINING FOR WOMEN AND YOUTHS

In a bold move to boost local enterprise and empower the grassroots, the Chairman of Ikono Local Government Council, Rt. Hon. Engr. Oto-Obong Essien, has officially flagged off a 5-day intensive skills acquisition training for women and youths.
The initiative is in collaboration with the Technology Incubation Centre, Uyo.
The training, which commenced Monday, 14 July, and is scheduled to run through Friday, 18 July 2025, is taking place at the Council Secretariat in Ibiaku Ntok Okpo. It focuses on practical, hands-on skills in key areas such as liquid soap and fabric wash production using local materials; wig-making from plantain stems and raffia; as well as cosmetology, including the production of body creams and soaps.
Speaking during the official launch, Engr. Essien expressed gratitude to God for the success of the initiative and extended appreciation to His Excellency, Governor Umo Eno, for the privilege to lead the people of Ikono and for his continued support and benevolence.
She described the initiative as a passionate effort to break the chains of economic limitations among women and youths, stating, "Today, we are here to learn how to use our locally sourced materials to make wigs and many other products, as well as explore in other skills. Women must break the barriers of time and seasons to become whatever they aspire to be."
She charged participants to take the training seriously, saying, “Take this opportunity seriously, and I assure you that each of you can become a wealth creator and, in turn, empower others. I want you to move forward from here and succeed.”
The council boss emphasised that the programme is inclusive, open not only to women but to youths as well, as part of a broader effort to ensure community-wide empowerment.
In a major announcement, Engr. Essien also unveiled a new enterprise, "Ikono Women Fabric Manufacturing Limited", aimed at promoting innovative business ideas and creating a sustainable support system for women in the area of fabric manufacturing.
In their goodwill messages, the Vice Chairman of Ikono LGC, Hon. John Bassey; Head of Local Government Service, Ikono Local Government Area, Elder Etim Ukosin; and Mrs. Otobong Nyakno commended the Chairman for her visionary leadership and people-centred initiatives.
They cited her numerous developmental strides, notably the construction of the new administrative block, and pledged their unwavering support to her administration while thanking Governor Umo Eno for his foresight in allowing a capable and compassionate leader to steer the affairs of Ikono.
Other dignitaries who spoke at the event included Obongawan Hannah Etuk, Mrs. Emem Umoren, and Professor Tony Usoro. They expressed admiration for the initiative and encouraged participants to make the most of the rare opportunity.
Earlier, the Director of the Technology Incubation Centre, Mrs. Iniobong El-Shaddai, lauded the Chairman for her selfless commitment to empowering women and fostering economic independence.
She assured that the Centre would deliver impactful and rewarding training sessions throughout the week.
“I am proud of the Chairman. Her leadership is a testament to the power of grassroots development and her consistent drive to build human capital in the local economy,” she noted.
